Case Study: Disabled Adaptions

Updated: Jun 26, 2023

Disabled Aids And Adaptations London

Project Overview

Rectory Surveyors was contacted by a family who needed an ensuite wet room installing for an elderly parent. Their relative had to reside on the ground floor, as they were no longer able to manage stairs, which necessitated the property requiring disabled adaptations.

Challenges

The family had approached their local authority for financial assistance for the work but with no luck. Rectory Surveyors inspected the property and assessed the needs of the elderly relative. We prepared an Accommodation Needs Report, along with a measured survey, plans and specification of what was required. The report included:

  • Assessing the long-term accommodation needs

  • Surveying existing accommodation

  • Evaluating options

  • Preparing existing and proposed layout plans to best meet the needs of the individual

  • Providing designs, specifying the adapted work, including specialised equipment and fittings to meet specific needs

Rectory Surveyors also engaged an independent Occupational Therapist to substantiate plans and the proposed solution. Armed with the information required the family decided to proceed and self-fund the project.

The Results

Rectory Surveyors oversaw the tender process for the project, using the services of specialist contractors that we have worked with for over 15 years and who are experienced in disabled adaptions. We managed the entire process and delivered the scheme on time and on budget. From initial assessment to completion, the project took 4 weeks.

The wet room and new ground floor accessible accommodation have been a great success and optimised living standards for the elderly relative. The family have subsequently used the Rectory Surveyors Accommodation Needs Report on the disabled adaptations required, and the assessment by the Occupation Therapist, to try and retrospectively obtain funding from their Local Authority. The Local Authority is currently reviewing the material.
