Inclusive Design & Accessibility

Inclusive Design & Accessibility

I have excellent knowledge of the regulatory framework relating to a wide variety of building types and their incorporation of inclusive design and accessibility, and can use this expertise when preparing surveys, recommending solutions and drawing up works and specifications. Inclusive design makes places usable by everyone, regardless of age, ability and circumstance. I can incorporate inclusive design and accessibility into projects am also familiar with the British Standards Institute (BSI) ‘Design for the Mind’ guidelines for people that have conditions as dementia, autism, dyspraxia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Essential Principles For Achieving An Inclusive Environment

Professional bodies such as Design Council and Construction Industry Council recommends that all building professionals work to these principles to achieve an inclusive environment.

  1. Contribute to building an inclusive society now and in the future

  2. Apply professional and responsible judgement and take a leadership role

  3. Apply and integrate the principles of inclusive design from the outset of a project

  4. Do more than just comply with legislation and codes

  5. Seek multiple views to solve accessibility and inclusivity challenges

  6. Acquire the skills, knowledge, understanding and confidence to make inclusion the norm not the exception

Access Audit and Report

An access audit/report is a means of assessing how accessible any particular premises or services are to disabled people. Access audits help to demonstrate your organisation has met its duties under the Equality Act 2010, is meeting its customer’s needs and are an essential tool for helping organisations understand what potential improvements could be made. I can undertake access assessments on existing and proposed buildings identifying problems and offering practical, prioritised solutions for incorporation into the design, adaption, development and maintenance plans.

How I Can Help

As an experienced professional building surveyor, I am aware that I have a significant role in helping to achieve an accessible and inclusive environment and have maintained my knowledge, skills and competence to put this into practice. I can use this experience to create solutions that everyone can use equally and independently, advising clients on how they can meet their obligations under the Equality Act 2010 combined with the functional requirements of the building regulations which similarly seeks a built environment that has the highest level of accessibility possible. I am also a Disability Living Foundation Level 4 Trusted Assessor
