DEMENTIA DESIGN SERVICES

The design of a building has a huge impact on people living with dementia that have sensory, mobility and/or cognitive impairments. Living environments that take into account the needs of those with dementia can help them feel more comfortable, move around more easily and achieve a better quality of life. In order to achieve the best from a dementia-friendly design you need specialist knowledge and advice at all stages of a redesign or development.

Designing For Those With Dementia

I am familiar with the British Standards Institute (BSI) ‘Design for the Mind’ guidelines for people that have conditions like dementia, autism, dyspraxia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, helping make an environment comfortable and improved for people who are neurodivergent. As I understand the impairments of those with dementia, I can utilise design principles built on the evidence and best practice to create more supportive environments for people with cognitive problems, including addressing physical issues such:

• Fixtures and fittings

How I Can Help

I have expertise and experience in dementia design and have provided consultation to care, nursing and residential homes on the planning, project management, contract administration and development of construction and adaption projects. I can provide independent advice and perform a 'disability assessment’, considering the adaptations necessary and create solutions that are accessible and accommodating to the needs of those with dementia and their carers.

I am also a Disability Living Foundation Level 4 Trusted Assessor and a member of The Access Association, a national association dedicated to access and inclusive design in the UK and a member of the Design In Mental Health Network, for people who have an interest in the design of mental health facilities.
